Understanding Domain Transfer EPP Codes: A Customer's Guide
Last updated: June 2025
**Description:**A comprehensive guide for shared hosting customers explaining what EPP codes are, how to obtain them, how to troubleshoot common issues, and the steps to transfer your domain successfully to Brixly.
What is an EPP Code?
An EPP code (also known as an Authorization Code or Auth Code) is a unique string of letters, numbers, and symbols used to securely transfer most domain names between registrars. Think of it as a password for your domain transfer—ensuring that only authorized persons can move your domain.
> Note: EPP codes are required for most generic TLDs (like .com
, .net
, .org
). Some country-specific domains (like .uk
) use a different process.
Why Are EPP Codes Important?
- Security: Prevents unauthorized transfers.
- Ownership Verification: Confirms you have the right to transfer the domain.
- Registrar Requirement: Most registrars will not process a transfer without it.
How to Obtain Your EPP Code
The process is usually straightforward and can be done via your current registrar’s dashboard. Here’s a typical step-by-step guide:
1. Log In to Your Registrar’s Account
- Visit your current domain registrar’s website.
- Log in to the account that manages your domain.
2. Locate Your Domain
- Navigate to the Domains or My Domains section.
- Find the domain you wish to transfer.
3. Request or View the EPP Code
- Look for an option like Domain Settings, Transfer Domain, or Get EPP Code.
- Click to display or request the EPP code.
- Some registrars may email the code to your registered email address.
**Example:**In your registrar’s dashboard, you may see something like:
EPP/Auth Code: 1a2b-3c4d-5e6f-7g8h
4. Copy the EPP Code
- Keep the code safe and do not share it with anyone except your new hosting provider or registrar.
Special Case: UK Domains (.uk
, .co.uk
, etc.)
For UK domains, you do not need an EPP code. Instead, you change the domain’s IPS Tag to CLOUDNS
(Brixly’s tag):
- Log in to your current registrar.
- Locate your domain and look for the IPS Tag or TAG Change option.
- Enter
CLOUDNS
as the new tag. - Save the changes.
Preparing Your Domain for Transfer
Before you start the transfer, make sure:
- The domain is unlocked (turn off Domain Lock or Registrar Lock).
- Your contact email address is up-to-date (you’ll receive confirmation emails here).
- The domain is at least 60 days old and not recently transferred or had major contact changes (ICANN rule for most domains).

Troubleshooting Common EPP Code Issues
Invalid or Incorrect EPP Code
- **Double-check for typos:**EPP codes are case-sensitive. Avoid extra spaces when copying.
- **Regenerate the code:**Request a new code from your registrar if the old one isn’t working.
- **Wait for email delivery:**Some registrars email the code—check your spam/junk folder.
- **Domain Lock:**Ensure your domain is unlocked.
Transfer Not Proceeding
- **60-Day Lock:**Domains can’t be transferred within 60 days of registration, transfer, or major contact changes.
- **WHOIS Privacy:**Disable WHOIS privacy if you’re not receiving transfer emails.
- **Outstanding Payments:**Make sure your domain is active and not expired.
